Michael Fehlings
MD, PhD, FRCSC, FACS
I am a Professor of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgeon at Toronto Western Hospital, and a Senior Scientist at the Krembil Brain Institute. I combine an active clinical practice in complex spinal surgery with a translationally oriented research program focused on discovering novel treatments for the injured spinal cord. I have held a number of prominent leadership roles, including the current Chair of the AO Foundation Clinical Investigation and Documentation Advisory Committee and past President of the International Neurotrauma Society. T-CAIREM provides the infrastructure and support needed to facilitate the utilization of AI to explore complex questions related to patient management and the advancement of translational research. Over the past few years, I have begun incorporating machine learning approaches into my own research to better understand patient outcomes. I believe that my access to high-quality traumatic and non-traumatic spinal cord injury datasets provides me with a unique opportunity to examine the application of AI to better understand outcomes for patients suffering from these devastating disorders. Additionally, as Vice-Chair of Research in the Department of Surgery, I am positioned to promote the T-CAIREM program and encourage the next generation of surgeons to become comfortable with AI in medicine.
