Winners of Temerty Innovation Grants announced

The Temerty Centre for AI Research and Education in Medicine (T-CAIREM) is pleased to announce two winners of the Temerty Innovation Grants for AI in Medicine and one winner of the CIFAR-Temerty Innovation Catalyst Grant. 

This is the first time these grants have been awarded by T-CAIREM, the one-year-old research centre at the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

For this funding competition, T-CAIREM received 67 applications that were adjudicated by 37 leading AI in Medicine researchers from England, the U.S., and Canada.

Here are the Principal Investigators of the grant-winning projects:

• Dr. Shaf Keshavjee (UHN Research)
Research project: “Advanced Ex Vivo Organ Assessments for Clinical Lung Transplant Using AI.” (Temerty Innovation Grant - $200,000 CAD) For more information on Dr. Shav Keshavjee

• Dr. Devin Singh (Hospital for Sick Children)
Research project: “Machine Learning-Based Innovation in Ocular Pediatric Assessment Using point of care ultrasound” (Temerty Innovation Grant - $200,000 CAD) For more information on Dr. Devin Singh. 

• Dr. Mojgan Hodaie (UHN)
Research project: “An Artificial Intelligence-based MR Imagine Reconstruction Framework” (CIFAR-Temerty Innovation Catalyst Grant - $130,000) For more information on Dr. Mojgan Hodaie.

“The leaders in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medicine adjudicating our first round of innovation funding, were deeply impressed by the calibre of the proposed research,” said T-CAIREM Research co-lead Prof. Anna Goldenberg who also serves as the Canada CIFAR AI Chair and CIFAR Fellow, Learning in Machines & Brains.

“We hope these grants will jumpstart some exciting novel approaches that transform medicine through Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the future,” said T-CAIREM Research co-lead Dr. Mjaye Mazwi.
