Ian Stanaitis
I am an Assistant Professor, Canadian Public Law and Governance in the School of Public Policy and Administration at York University (also cross-appointed to the graduate program at Osgoode Hall Law School). After being called to the Ontario bar in 2009, I practiced law in the private sector before moving to the public sector where I advised public officials about their ethical and legal obligations.
My research program focuses on public sector governance and accountability and on bringing those literatures to bear on the regulation of technologies that are driving greater personalization in healthcare.
I am currently a Legal Member of the Research Ethics Board at SickKids and previously held the inaugural research fellowship in Artificial Intelligence Law & Ethics at SickKids' Centre for Computational Medicine. I have also held a post-doctoral fellowship researching the Governance of A.I. in Healthcare at Dr. Rebecca Pillai Riddell’s Opportunities to Understand Childhood Hurt (OUCH) Lab.
As a person with a rare monogenic disorder, I advocate for the rare disease community, have served as a member of the board for the Canadian Organization for Rare Disorders (CORD) and currently sit as a member of the CIHR Institute of Genetics' Advisory Board.
