Healthcare of the Future Summer Program: In-person session in Prince Edward Island! (Aug 18-22)

Summer Program Overview

T-CAIREM is teaming up with the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) to run a one-week program for 30 high school students in August 2025 in PEI. The program will be delivered IN-PERSON to high school students (grades 10-12) with interests in healthcare, AI policy, and/or computer science. Students will gain an understanding and receive hands-on experience developing AI models. The program has been designed for students interested in careers in medicine and/or those who want to develop AI tools in healthcare.

The one-week program consists of:
• Seminars and presentations from local and national AI experts
• Social/breakout activities with other students
• Group project with students (5 groups of 6 people)
• Final presentations with esteemed faculty from UPEI
• Students who finish the program will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Date: August 18 to 22, 2025
Timing: Runs from 9am-2pm AT each day
Method: In-person
Location: UPEI Campus, room details to be shared with registered participants.
(This in-person program will not be streamed online.)

Learning Objectives

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

• Explain fundamental concepts of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)
• Write basic code in Python to implement simple ML tasks
• Describe and apply the steps involved in developing a machine learning model
• Analyze real-world applications of AI in healthcare settings
• Critically evaluate the broader implications of AI in healthcare, including sustainability and One Health perspectives
• Explore and reflect on potential career pathways at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and innovation.


Program Cost

Thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Literacy Foundation Inc., we are able to offer the one-week program to students at a reduced cost of $250 per person. Included in the program cost is lunch for 5 days. Additional bursaries are available for students who require financial assistance.

Gemma Postill

Program Mentor
Gemma Postill is enrolled in the MD/PhD program at the University of Toronto where she is studying clinical epidemiology. Gemma previously completed her undergraduate degree at Western University where she studied One Health, which inspired her to become a clinician-scientist by highlighting the intersection of research and medicine as well as the need to take a systems-level approach to healthcare given the many factors that influence health. 

Anglin Dent

Anglin Dent

Program Mentor
Anglin holds an HBSc from the University of Guelph, an MSc from the University of Toronto, and is entering her fourth year of the University of Toronto MD/PhD program. Her previous studies have involved the development and validation of AI tools for precision medicine in cancer care, as well as the examination of how to best integrate healthcare solutions in a way that complements, rather than replaces, current workflows. In her PhD at SickKids, Anglin is excited to conduct clinical validation studies of machine learning technologies for early diagnosis and personalized therapy in childhood asthma.
