Adventures in Med-Tech Innovation and Application of Artificial Intelligence in Image-Guided Therapy

Dr. Courtney will describe his personal experiences in the development of new medical technologies, as well as some of the challenges and opportunities in med-tech commercialization in Canada. He will also provide an overview of his current research in the development of AI- enabled research in tissue characterization of coronary plaque and image quality improvement. Finally, he will describe high-level activities in the area of applying AI for image-guided therapies, including the creation of INOVAIT (a federally funded program for advancing image-guided therapy), and potential approaches to overcoming barriers in using clinical data to train AI algorithms.

Learning objectives

• To provide an anecdotal summary of experiences in med-tech innovation as a clinician with a technical background.
• To discuss the status of and opportunities for med-tech innovation in Canada, with an emphasis directed towards Image Guidance, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Health technologies.
• To encourage discussion on principles and models for collecting and using data via data trusts and federated learning models.
