POSITION PAPER-Draft.png

Opportunity

T-CAIREM is looking for a current trainee to lead the production of a position paper. This will include forming a working group consisting of academics across the T-CAIREM Network, conducting a literature review, writing the paper, and overseeing the editorial process. The trainee leading this effort will be listed as the first author of this work. (Applicants for this role can be graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, or clinical residents.)

The Position Paper

Foundation models in healthcare possess significant potential to revolutionize diagnostics, personalized medicine, and clinical decision-making. However, challenges related to fairness and bias remain critical concerns. These models are trained on extensive datasets that may reflect historical biases in healthcare, encompassing racial, gender, and socioeconomic disparities. It's essential to explore the current status of foundation models in healthcare, including risks, biases, and opportunities for responsible growth in a timely manner. If left unaddressed, biases in training data, models, and testing can result in inaccurate predictions or unequal treatment outcomes, further exacerbating existing inequities.

T-CAIREM's academic community is developing a position paper to identify the root causes of potential biases in foundation models and to tackle the challenge of debiasing before implementing these models on a large scale. This initiative will be co-supervised by Dr. Laleh Seyyed-Kalantari.
