No Break for Brilliance: 35 Students Spend March Break Doing AI Research
T-CAIREM's Gemma Postill greets future doctors, nurses, and coders at the 2026 T-CAIREM March Break Bootcamp!

Last week, T-CAIREM wrapped up its 2026 Healthcare of the Future March Break Bootcamp. Thirty-five students from grades 10 to 12 across the Greater Toronto Area traded in their spring break for something arguably more exciting: a front-row seat to the future of healthcare, guided by three T-CAIREM Education Affiliates drawn from the University of Toronto medical and graduate programs.
Over five days of interactive workshops, group projects, and lively discussions, the high schoolers delved into the world of AI in medicine, exploring machine learning models, data types, real-world clinical applications, and the profound benefits and challenges of integrating AI into the healthcare system.
"I came in with very little knowledge about AI, but by the end, I had learned so many new things and gained a much better understanding of how it works," said Diego, one of this year's participants. "Before, I thought AI might replace jobs in the future, but now I see it more as a tool that can support healthcare workers, improve efficiency, and help save more lives."
For Alyssa, who already knew she wanted to pursue medicine, the bootcamp didn't change her direction so much as deepen it. "I didn't know just how much of an impact AI has on medicine, and this program really opened my eyes to the various careers and specialties that it’s involved in," she said.
Joyce, who came into the program with some prior knowledge in machine learning, said that “this program has helped guide my next steps into considering a career I enjoy. I learned about a new career — a clinical scientist — and gained lots of advice and knowledge."
One of the bootcamp's key features is its balance of challenging content and engaging activities. Students didn't just sit through lectures. They build things, debate ideas, and collaborate in teams to craft their own AI solutions to real-world healthcare challenges.
Behind every successful bootcamp is a dedicated team. Students repeatedly expressed their appreciation for T-CAIREM's Education Trainee Affiliates Gemma Postill, Anglin Dent, and Ariana Walji as instructors and role models. Participants also heard from guest speaker Julia Wiercigroch, another T-CAIREM education affiliate, who added an extra dimension to their group work.
Canada's healthcare system is actively deploying AI in diagnostics, clinical decision support, hospital operations, and medical research. It’s no longer a question of whether tomorrow's doctors, nurses, and coders will work alongside AI, but whether they'll be equipped to do so thoughtfully, critically, and ethically.
That's the gap T-CAIREM's bootcamp is closing, one cohort at a time. By introducing these concepts early, the program is planting seeds that will grow into careers, innovations, and ultimately, healthier Canadians.
