How AI will change medical education delivery: From living curricula to ambient assessment


Abstract

For most of its history, medical education has treated the curriculum as a fixed but updatable document and its content as durable artifacts: the syllabus, the lecture, the handout, the exam. AI lets us reconsider all three. This session offers a constructive view of how medical education can evolve when capable AI becomes integrated into the fabric of delivery of medical education. 
 
The talk proposes a modern architecture built on a few shifts. First, curriculum as scaffold: a living layer, grounded in an institution's approved sources with full provenance, in which competencies are not hard-coded constants but governed, versioned objects that move as guidelines and standards move. Second, artifacts as transient: when grounded content can be generated on demand, the durable assets are no longer the documents but the scaffold itself and the accumulating evidence of competence. Third, a new layer of AI competencies that must enter the standard. Fourth, the use of virtual patients that turn scarce, scheduled practice into unlimited, varied, low-stakes repetition. And finally, ambient performance assessment: continuous, multimodal measurement drawn from real and simulated encounters that generates competency evidence without the episodic exam.

1. Describe a modern architecture for AI-augmented medical education in which adaptive curriculum and ambient assessment operate as a single closed loop.

2. Explain "curriculum as scaffold": a living, provenance-grounded layer in which competencies are governed, versioned objects rather than fixed content

3. Identify the benefit of transient educational artifacts

4. Evaluate the validity, trust, and pragmatic considerations of ambient assessment of the medical learner


About the Presenter

Dr. Samir C. Grover is a Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Toronto, a gastroenterologist and advanced endoscopist, and the inaugural Executive Vice-President, Academics at Scarborough Health Network. He holds the Pialis Family Chair in Education Research at the Scarborough Health Network Research Institute, where he leads a research program focused on simulation-based training, technology-enhanced learning, and assessment in endoscopy and medical education. His work has influenced endoscopy education and training practices internationally, with a particular emphasis on simulation, deliberate practice, and competency-based assessment. Dr. Grover is also the founder of the University of Toronto Endoscopic Simulation Course and has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching, educational innovation, and program development.
